friends of fortyfivedownstairs

The friends is a membership program that allows you to support and be involved in the diverse and stimulating events that have become the hallmark at fortyfivedownstairs.

fortyfivedownstairs survives in a competitive commercial environment and does not rely on any public funding for its operation, providing freedom from regulatory statutory bodies. Julian Burnside, the chairman, explains the key to its success as twofold, “the curatorial guidance of Mary Lou Jelbart, and the financial support of its foundation patrons and sponsors. Without them it would not exist. With their help, fortyfivedownstairs has become an essential part of Melbourne´s rich cultural life.

The friends of fortyfivedownstairs was founded in 2008 and is run by a committee of dedicated supporters. They have so far raised $10,000, instituted a marketing plan and created another tier of support, bringing friends along to events and spreading the word about what´s happening at the venue.
