The immediacy of the locations awake all my senses, this allows me to see the possibilities in the landscape; the shapes, colours and line, and then the painting takes on a life of its own.
Journeys Through Landscape, is an exhibition by renowned Australian landscape watercolourist, Terry Swann.
Swann’s visceral contemporary watercolours capture in vivid abstraction the essence of Australia’s ancient and unspoilt landscapes.
The works created over two years chart Swann’s exploration of national parks and remote wilderness areas around the country, including Victoria, which she painted for the first time.
From the riot of colour of the Victorian High Country in spring, to the kaleidoscopic wonders of the Caterpillar Dreaming country in the East MacDonnell Ranges, Swann’s interpretations of place are filtered through her senses and emotions, reflecting a deep connection to country.
“The immediacy of the locations awake all my senses, this allows me to see the possibilities in the landscape; the shapes, colours and line, and then the painting takes on a life of its own. I emotionally respond to all I’m experiencing. It’s exhilarating and a privilege to be able to work out there,” Swann said.
Swann’s plein air paintings reflect the colour, movement, architecture and drama of the Australian landscape. Through her unique perspective she captures its essence with energy and emotion.
Swann has exhibited extensively for the last 30 years in New South Wales and Queensland. Journeys Through Landscape is her second Melbourne solo exhibition.
Born in Sydney, Terry Swann is one of Australia’s foremost contemporary watercolourists. She has been a professional artist for over 30 years.
Each winter Swann travels through remote areas of Australia working on location in all weather conditions.
Her work is strongly bound to place, the mood of the landscape and her own emotions captured and reflected with a perspective, vibrancy and colour-palette that is uniquely Australian.
Swann works in watercolour and mixed media only using colour created from natural pigments, including ochre found on-site.
Swann had her first solo exhibition in 1978 at Sydney’s Holdsworth Galleries who exhibited her work for over 18 years. She has held numerous solo exhibitions in Sydney and Brisbane. Journeys through Landscape is her second Melbourne solo exhibition.
Her work is held in numerous private and public collections including the State Library of Brisbane, State Parliament House of Queensland and Federal Parliament Offices, Brisbane.
