TomboyBill sees light in the dark – a glimmer in the depths.
Creatures of the sea inspire this latest body of work from TomboyBill.
A Leap in the Deep takes the viewer on a journey into the underwater world, with an exploration of our subconscious mind. The deep sea reveals to us all kinds of weird and wonderful creatures – more than our conscious mind could ever imagine!
The process of painting intuitively then brings about imagery that often appears in the form of both human and sea creature, creating a strange fusion between the two species.
TomboyBill sees beauty in the lost, broken and unloved; she sees light in the dark – a glimmer in the depths. With these powerful new paintings we are able to view the unexpected beauty in dark and hidden things.
TomboyBill is a Melbourne artist exploring ideas of belonging.
Growing up in Violet Town, a small rural town in Victoria, she moved to the city as a teenager, keen to pursue her artistic dreams. She paints with a gentle, self-deprecating humour, exploring feelings of dislocation; longing to be somewhere else, of never quite feeling at home.
‘I think we all feel disconnected or out of place at different times during our lives. I love my gritty urban existence, but often yearn for the simple, clean, country life…’
With a signature style of dark and light shades, TomboyBill paints exclusively on paper in earthy, dynamic colours with soft-flowing brush strokes, scribbles, dribbles and scratches. Each piece is personal, intimate and reflective, often populated with solitary, melancholy figures set against a stark landscape.
They stare back at you, often reflecting our own hidden thoughts…
