Collide throws three international artists into an exciting and unusual ensemble.

When the Saxophone, Cello and Piano collided in 2017, new music as well as classics by Haydn, Bruch, and Glinka alike were infused with new life, colours and energy.

There is no shortage of excitement for both music-lovers and newcomers in every performance.

Yelian He – cello
Hailed as a ‘consummate master of the bow’ by The Strad magazine, Chinese-Australian cellist, Yelian He, is the winner of the 2009 Royal Over-Seas League String Competition in London and the Grand Prize and Audience Prize winner of the 2014 Australian Cello Awards competition in Sydney (now amalgamated with the Young Performer’s Awards). He has appeared in concert at world class venues and festivals on most continents.

Yelian was presented to Her Majesty the Queen Elizabeth II in 2011 at a reception for outstanding Australians achievers in the UK and again in 2013 in a private performance for the Queen and her Commonwealth guests at Buckingham Palace. In November 2017, Yelian and Yasmin released the CD, Y2, with Willowhayne Records, comprising of an eclectic selection of composers and was picked up by British Airways for the in-flight entertainment from January 2018.

He currently plays on a cello that is 140 years old – crafted by Hungarian luthier Adolphus Monnig in 1877, as well as a cello made in 2018 by Yanbing Chen.

Yasmin Rowe – piano
A thrilling recording of Bach’s second Partita…British pianist Yasmin Rowe has a keen sense of line and voicing, particularly in the final movement Capriccio’ – BBC Editor, BBC Music Magazine

As an international concert pianist, Yasmin Rowe has won numerous prizes. She was the first prize winner at the Moray International Piano Competition (UK) and the EPTA UK Piano Competition (UK), as well Seven Oaks Young Musician of the Year Competition (UK) and the Antena 2 Competition (Portugal). Yasmin has gained recognition from when she was 13 – having given her first professional recital, newspapers have praised her as “remarkable for her musicianship, confidence and clean touch”. Recognising her talent and successes, Yasmin was presented to HRH Princess Anne following a private performance at St James’ Palace in 2006.

She has appeared in many world class venues including Wigmore Hall, Bridgewater Hall, Shanghai Concert Hall, Wuxi Grand Theatre, Beijing Forbidden City Concert Hall, Melbourne Recital Centre Elisabeth Murdoch Hall, and Festivals such as the Edinburgh Fringe and Brighton Festival. Yasmin toured the UK in April 2018 including Hampton Court Palace in London.

Joseph Lallo – saxophone
Joseph Lallo is an associate saxophone teacher at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music at the University of Melbourne, where he also completing his PhD. He is the Artistic Director for Melbourne Saxophone and The Melbourne International Saxophone Festival, and performs internationally as a soloist and chamber musician. Joseph is a graduate of The University of Melbourne (Barry Cockroft & Ian Godfrey), the Bordeaux Conservatoire de Musique (Marie-Bernadette Charrier), and the Strasbourg Haute École des Arts du Rhin (Philippe Geiss). He has performed in masterclasses with Claude Delangle, Kenneth Tse, Vincent David, Jean-Denis Michat, Guy Lacour, and Neils Bijl, amongst others.

Joseph has been the recipient of numerous awards and scholarships, including the 2013 Strasbourg HEAR New Talent Scholarship, the 2012 Australian Arts Council Skills and Development Grant, the 2009 Catherine Grace McWilliam Bequest for achieving the highest result in his Bachelor of Music, the 2009 Donovan-Johnston Memorial Travel Scholarship, and the 2008 Rogowski Saxophone Scholarship.
