… a visual journey through abstraction, amorphic forms, dimensional models, and demarcated spaces.

I Am A Scattering Light is a new series of paintings by Marion Harper. The exhibition proposes a visual journey through abstraction, amorphic forms, dimensional models, and demarcated spaces.

Harper’s oil paintings on wooden board are a contemporary interpretation of modern abstraction, harking back to Bauhaus sensibilities.

Three-dimensional space collides with flat space, alongside geometric candy pigments and organic forms, resulting in illuminated painting scattering like light.

Marion Harper is a multidisciplinary artist based in Melbourne, Australia.

Marion has exhibited extensively in Australia and New Zealand in galleries and institutions including Centre for Contemporary Photography, Monash University, Linden New Art and Teststrip.

Marion has also worked with the Melbourne Fringe Festival, Melbourne University’s Melbourne International Biennial, and Experimenta Media Arts. She has tutored at RMIT and Swinburne University. She was the recipient of an Australia Council grant for a Multimedia Residency in France.

Like the alchemist Nicholas Flamel, I have sought after an ‘elixir’, (the highest aim of ancient alchemical transmutation, that of turning base metal into gold or the mixture of chemical compounds that would achieve eternal life), a sort of ‘philosopher’s stone’ / an illuminated painting.

The works play with alchemical metaphors – dissolving, coagulating, amalgamating, and precipitating —exploring variegated points of focus, perspective and spatial depth. Bodily forms becoming a vessel for transformation.

Like scientific experiments, I use geometries as specimens in a ‘cabinet of curiosity’ —Transmutation through candy pigments and organic forms, abstract geometry and detailed linearity, layering and transparency. Three-dimensional space collided with flat space, deflated and conflated.

Embracing both the irrational and the cogent, objects of pure perception and other-worldly spirits, phenomenological methods and the metamorphous of everyday materials, I worked towards the ‘philosopher’s stone’ / an illuminated painting scattering like light.
