…the ever-changing, dramatic landscapes of the Mutawintji National Park.
After a distinguished career as a Research Professor in Neuroscience at the University of Melbourne, in his retirement David Hirst has embarked on a painting career which is influenced by his travels and work as a research scientist. The inspiration for his current body of work emerges from time spent observing the ever-changing, dramatic landscapes of the Mutawintji National Park.
Of his practice David Hirst writes “Art attempts to trap an emotion or a memory so the feeling can be shared with others. My practice explores emotional events that I experienced during my travels in life and as a research scientist. I seek the parallels between both fields, ultimately striving to present an observation for contemplation.”
The success of Hirst’s career as a research scientist was spurred on by his active, hands-on experimental work, and this approach is clearly evident in his approach to art-making which demonstrates a vibrant and dynamic quality.
