Marco Luccio’s exhibition New York Mythic sees the artist return to his favourite subject matter—the city of New York—from a new, aerial perspective. The expansive views witnessed by Luccio in a helicopter ride over his concrete muse are shown to dramatic effect, and the multiple personalities of this assertive and storied city are brought to life across Luccio’s expanding repertoire of mediums. This is New York as you have not seen her before; a multi-faceted homage to a city that is as much myth as material.

This expansive exhibition encompasses paintings, drypoints, drawings and etchings and features work made from towering vantage points in the Chrysler, Rockefeller and Empire State buildings, among others.

In New York Mythic Luccio’s uncompromisingly bold style meets its match in a city of similar ilk. It’s an inspiring and energising exhibition showcasing the work of an artist who, like his subject matter, is deeply original, immediately recognisable and constantly evolving.

Marco Luccio is an award-winning artist whose work is represented in over 25 major public collections both nationally and internationally.

As a professional full time artist he has held 36 major solo exhibitions, exhibited in over 150 group, curated and award shows and received several commissions.

Luccio has been collected in various private, public and corporate collections, including the New York Public Library, the Museum of the City of New York, the New York Historical Society and the National Gallery of Australia.

His work has been shortlisted for many major awards including the 2010 and 2009 Dobell and the 2013 Adelaide Perry Prize for Drawing.

In addition, Luccio has completed artist residencies and study travel trips in New York, Paris and Italy. He has given many guest lectures throughout Australia and overseas, including at the Art Students League of New York and the Printmaking Centre of New Jersey. He has taught drawing, painting and printmaking at various institutions including ongoing classes at the National Gallery of Victoria.

In 2013 Luccio collaborated with award-winning author John Hughes to create the book, ‘The Garden of Sorrows’, which features 60 of Luccio’s etchings. Luccio’s work is also represented in many publications including a feature and the front cover of Maree Coote’s ‘The Art of Being Melbourne’ 2012, and a feature in Dr Colin Holden’s ‘Piranesi’s Grandest Tour’ 2014.

In 2010 Marco Luccio was invited to exhibit his solo show, ‘International Cities’, at the Australian Consulate General in New York.
