The first of three concerts featuring world class musicians in a world of styles
From Spain to Latin America, across cultures, genres and the Globe, comes a season of three concerts featuring glorious music, dance and song out of Melbourne’s own cultural fabric. This intimate series of early evening concerts is designed to envelope listeners in beautiful sound, invigorate them with spectacular dance and release them to the journey home, refreshed and delighted.
Dancer, Tomas Arroquero sees contemporary Flamenco as evolving from within the dancer, informed and shaped by intense study of the aesthetics and essence of the magnificent, ancient Andalucian tradition. Working with guitarist Kieren Ray, dancer, Jini Limi, and singer, Manolo Jaen, Tomas explores ways of shifting and realigning Flamenco away from ‘only a traditional cultural based art form’ into the immediate world of contemporary Melbourne.
Supported by the City of Melbourne Arts Grants Program
Tomas Arroquero is a prominent figure in the Melbourne flamenco scene and trained in Australia before moving to Madrid in 1995. He studied at Amor de Dios for 6 years before moving to Jerez de la Frontera in 2001 to further his own distinct style and develop a closer relationship with Andalusia, the spiritual homeland of every flamenco worldwide.
In 2006, after 5 years based in Jerez, Tomas moved to Seville for another 4 years of intensive training, well and truly earning his stripes as a professional flamenco dancer. Having always returned to Australia to visit family and conduct flamenco dance workshops, he finally made a more permanent move to Melbourne where he currently teaches and is much sought after both nationally and abroad.
Tomas has performed in Spain, Australia and extensively throughout the U.K. with ‘Flamenco Express’ and has conducted workshops in Australia, England, Germany, Hong Kong, Canada, New Zealand and the United States. In Melbourne he regularly performs as Sonidos Flamencos with fellow dancer Jini Lim, guitarist, Kieren Ray and Australia’s premier Flamenco singer, Manolo Jaen.
