Unwrapped Hong Kong is a selection of contemporary urban scrolls evolved from artist Michael Pearce’s time as an Artist in Residence at the Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts in 2007 and 2009.
Michael was drawn to the dramatic wrapped buildings under construction and renovation, which were wrapped in blue, green or gold shade cloth and covered by a scaffolding lattice of bamboo, suggesting towering pagodas. Although being one of the most densely populated places on earth the drawings are devoid of human life; due to Michael’s interest in concentrating on the architectural and constructed landscape.
Michael is a visual artist and theatre designer working in Australia, New Zealand , Europe and Asia. His contemporary set and costume designs have won three Green Room Awards for best Dance Design including Stephen Baynes At the Edge Of Night performed by The Australian Ballet in 2010. Michael exhibits throughout Australia and his Vietnam inspired Fluid was shown at fortyfivedownstairs in 2011. The early Unwrapped Hong Kong series were exhibited in Hong Kong in 2009.
