Richard Besley is a Melbourne based painter who has won acclaim for his contemplative colourist improvisations over the past 15 years. His delicate and ethereal compositions reveal a preoccupation with surfaces, layers and light.
Recent Painting features large scale works on canvas developed from an ongoing body of work in which abstract compositions are derived from natural forms and patterns. Rich surfaces are built through paring back layers of texture and glaze.
Suffused with intense colour, the work is suspended somewhere between the metaphysical and material.
