Saray Iluminado

Saray Iluminado perform Sevdah, the traditional songs of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Sephardic Jewish Romances from the Balkans. Its repertoire celebrates the ancient Balkan cities where a multitude of cultures coexisted and thrived in cosmopolitan artistic environments. This repertoire includes songs that speak of the universal themes of love, grief, of various societal changes or of the unique Sephardic Jewish life in the cities such as Sarajevo, Mostar and others.

Saray Iluminado includes Nela Trifkovic, a Bosnian-Australian composer and singer, Australia’s leading Klezmer and Sephardic musician Ernie Gruner, and multi-instrumentalists William Thompson and Kelly Dowall, who share a passion for Balkan, Turkish and Mediterranean  music.

This project is supported by the VCA and MCM’s Graduate Mentorship program, which is made possible by the State Government through Creative Victoria.
